"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."
--Anne Frank
"In August of that year my mother-in-law died. The minister saw me up close at the family service the night before her funeral - my split and swollen lip, black eye and broken glasses, the other bruises on my arms and neck, and asked me what had happened. I couldn’t look at him and I couldn’t talk.
He said, "He did this to you, didn’t he?" When he saw the tears in my eyes, he knew.
That was the last time that I let myself be abused. I heard about a shelter where my kids and I could be safe and cared for, and we were out of there."
